Winter-proofing your Kamal: Keep your Kamado in top condition
The days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping, and the barbecue season may feel like it’s coming to an end. But before storing your Kamal for a longer period, it’s important to clean and maintain it properly. This ensures your Kamal stays in top condition and is ready for the next grilling season. We’ve listed the key steps for you below.
1. Self-cleaning your Kamal
After your final barbecue of the season, let your Kamal burn for another 30 minutes at 260°C. At this high temperature, any food residues and waste will burn off naturally, leaving the inside of your Kamal largely clean.
2. Cleaning the grates
Remove the grates from your Kamal.
-
Stainless steel grate: Scrape the grate while it’s still slightly warm, then wash it. Our grill cleaner, foam, and 3-in-1 brush make this task easy. If you won’t use it for a longer period, it’s best to store it indoors.
-
Cast iron grate: Wash the grate thoroughly and lightly oil it afterward to prevent rust.

3. Manual cleaning
Use a dry brush to remove any remaining debris inside your Kamal.

Empty the fire bowl and ash collector to ensure no old residue is left behind.

4. Cleaning the exterior
Wipe the exterior with a slightly damp cloth, not too wet, just enough to remove dirt and grease.

You can clean the side tables and handles the same way. These parts can also be easily removed from the Kamal and stored safely.

5. Winter storage
Keep the air vents open to allow airflow and prevent mold from forming.

Use a cover and place your Kamal under a shelter to protect it from rain and snow.

Air out your Kamal regularly, especially if it won’t be used for an extended period.
By following these steps, your Kamal will stay reliable and beautiful for many years. When the next barbecue season arrives, you’ll be able to start grilling with confidence without worrying about rust or buildup.
